The Indiana University Health Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center, located on the IU Health North Hospital campus, will open on Monday, January 6, 2020.
The IU Health Schwarz Cancer Center is an 88,000 square foot, two-story facility connected to the south entrance of IU Health North Hospital. The $55 million cancer center, which broke ground in August 2018, brings together, all under one roof, cancer services including radiation oncology, hematology-oncology, pharmacy, laboratory and patient navigation.“The IU Health Schwarz Cancer Center is an important piece of IU Health’s promise to deliver the best care for patients,” says Doug Puckett, president of the IU Health Indianapolis Suburban Region, which includes IU Health North, Saxony, Tipton and West hospitals. “
Through this investment, IU Health is creating better access to cancer care and bringing treatment closer to home for patients living on the north side of Indianapolis and beyond. When we open our doors, we look forward to extending the reach of treatment and care patients have come to expect from IU Health Cancer Centers.”
Shelly Schwarz, along with her late husband, Joe Schwarz, committed $10 million to the cancer center. Joe Schwarz passed away in March 2018 after his second battle with cancer. Shelly made the gift to honor Joe’s grateful spirit and recognize the care he received as an IU Health patient.
“Even in the midst of her grief, Shelly is caring for others with this gift,” explains IU Health Chief Philanthropy Officer Crystal Miller. “She is making it possible for more patients to access the renowned cancer care of IU Health.”
Before cutting the ribbon to celebrate the grand opening of the IU Health Schwarz Cancer Center, team members recognized colleagues who have gone through, or are going through, cancer treatment with a Survivor Walk that took place on December 18, 2019. IU Health team members who have experienced cancer were invited to participate in a Survivor Walk from the hospital, through the connector and into the cancer center. Team members lined the connector hallway to the cancer center to celebrate alongside cancer survivors during the walk. On December 17, 2019, the IU Health Foundation hosted a private grand-opening event. Carmel City Councilwoman Sue Finkam presented IU Health Foundation Board Member and donor Shelly Schwarz with a City of Carmel Proclamation naming this day the “IU Health Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center Day.”The IU Health Schwarz Cancer Center is located at 11645 N Illinois Street in Carmel. Appointments may be scheduled beginning January 6, 2020. Patients can learn more or schedule an appointment by calling 317.688.4800 or by visiting iuhealth.org/cancer.
